Image

This silver bodyguard badge belonged to Private Edward Bannister Signal – one of three New Zealanders attached to the personal bodyguard of Lord Roberts, Commander-in-Chief of British forces in South Africa, January-November 1900.

Signal arrived in South Africa with New Zealand's Second Contingent in February 1900. He was assigned to Roberts' bodyguard after being wounded in action. To commemorate his service with this elite unit Signal received an autographed photograph of Lord Roberts.
