Fort St George sign

Image

The Māori position at Porou pā stood on a terrace across the Katikara River from Fort St George, where this sign was erected. The mass grave had been marked by a concrete slab laid by a local farmer. Like many New Zealand Wars sites, Porou pā is now private land. Some of the Māori dead were from the upper Whanganui region, where Pai Mārire soon won many converts as a result.
