In early 1916 the Maori Contingent ceased to exist and was replaced by the New Zealand Pioneer

More than 2500 Māori and Pacific Islanders served overseas with the NZEF during the First World War and 336 never returned. One of these casualties was Second Lieutenant Hēnare Mōkena Kōhere, a highly respected officer of the Ngāti Porou tribe, who died of wounds on 16 September 1916.
