Anti-militarist criticism of Joseph Ward

Labour and anti-militarist groups opposed the government’s move towards militarisation in the years leading up to the outbreak of the First World War. Prime Minister Sir Joseph Ward donated the battle cruiser H.M.S. New Zealand to the Royal Navy on New Zealand’s behalf in 1909. His patriotic gesture was resented by critics, who, as this card suggests, complained that working people would be funding Ward’s largesse through taxes for many years to come.
