Apirana Ngata

Apirana Ngata

Apirana Ngata (1874–1950) was the key Māori politician in the early 20th century and a significant leader in the Māori community.

During the Second World War he supported Māori taking part, on the grounds that ‘British sovereignty was accepted by our forefathers and it has given the Maori people rights which they would not have been accorded under any conqueror.’
