The caption to go with this photograph reads: "Gun crew goes into action. Laying is Gnr John Braithwaite, Palmerston North; ramming is Gnr Sam Gilbert of Samoa; loading is Gnr Peter Jansen of Pahiatua". Photograph taken in Korea, 1 April 1952, by Ian Mackley. This is the Charlie 3 gun...that's my dad - John Braithwaite, gun layer - sitting at the sights, wearing the white belt. This picture was used by NZ Post in 2009, as part of its Anzac stamp series.

the 1st contingent of 16th field were classed as the worst equiped troops that ever left nz. arrived Pusan-no signal wire told to flog it,first winter at times 30-40 below nz winter gear only.soles of boots fell off tied up with string or what ever, issued with yank summer sleeping bags run out of ammo. issued with badly rusted shells and mouldy cordite
