Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu in 1940

Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu in 1940. Ngārimu was the first Māori soldier awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). He and Willie Apiata (2007) are the only Māori to have received the VC serving with New Zealand forces.

The first VC recipient of Māori descent, William Rhodes-Moorhouse (1915), earned his award flying with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War.

William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse - a recipient of the VC - is also Maori - His mother, Mary Ann Rhodes was the half caste daughter of William Barnard Rhodes and Otahi, a native of Taranaki - a blood member of the Ngati Ruanui tribe which makes Moorehouse - Maori also.
