
Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu in 1940. Ngārimu was the first Māori soldier awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). He and Willie Apiata (2007) are the only Māori to have received the VC serving with New Zealand forces.
The first VC recipient of Māori descent, William Rhodes-Moorhouse (1915), earned his award flying with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War.
