Webb Ellis statue

This statue of William Webb Ellis is outside Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England. Ellis is often credited with inventing rugby by picking up the ball and running with it.

A bronze plaque with the statue reads: 'THE LOCAL BOY WHO INSPIRED THE GAME OF RUGBY FOOTBALL ON THE CLOSE AT RUGBY SCHOOL IN 1823. SCULPTOR: GRAHAM IBBSEON 1997'.
