Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Catherine Flynn was born about 1826.

She married Charles Brantania in 1872 in New Zealand, possibly in Port Chalmers.

Charles, from Italy, worked as a restaurant keeper and butcher in Queenstown in the 1860’s at the time of the gold rush.

In 1875 Charles was working as a barman in Port Chalmers when he was declared bankrupt.

Later that year Catherine was advertising for “two men boarders” at 5 Gloucester Buildings in Filleul St, Dunedin.

In 1877 Charles placed a notice in the paper that “I will not be responsible for and DEBTS contracted by my wife”.

He died at their home in Filleul St in 1879.

When Catherine signed the suffrage petition she was living in Lower York Place.

She died at her home on 3 May 1899 and is buried with Charles in the Southern Cemetery.
