Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ann Duncan was born on 21 January 1862 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Duncan, a coal miner, and Mary Jane Lawson.
She came to New Zealand in the 1860s and she married Samuel James Carr, a coal miner, in 1884.
For an unknown reason Samuel changed his name to Lee in 1890s.
They had 14 children and lived, at first, in Kaitangata before moving to Shag Point where Ann signed the suffrage petition.
In the late 1890s they moved to Nightcaps in Southland where Ann died on 2 December 1923.
Her obituary said she 'was of a cheery disposition and well-read on many subjects, and could discourse freely and intelligently on historical events or current topics of the day.'
Samuel died in 1938, they are buried together in the Wairio Cemetery near Nightcaps.
