Sarah Firkin was born about 1835 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England – the daughter of Eli Firkin, a turner, and Rachel Robinson.
She married Thomas Wootton, a publican and widower with two children, on 29 November 1871 in West Bromwich.
They had three children before they emigrated to Australia in the late 1870s.
They arrived in Port Chalmers in January 1880 on the Tararua and settled in Dunedin.
Thomas died in 1882 at their home in South Dunedin and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition she was living in Reid Rd, South Dunedin.
Sarah died at her daughter’s home on 15 January 1912 – she buried with Thomas in the Northern Cemetery.
