Township between Napier and Hastings on the banks of the Clive River. A trading post was established at Clive (then known by its Māori name Waipūreku) in 1850, and it rivalled Napier for a brief period. The development of Napier’s port and Clive’s vulnerability to floods limited its growth.
Meaning of place name
Hawke's Bay has many names that recall British soldiers who served in India. The name was probably given by John Curling, who was associated with Sir Charles Napier at the Court of the Rajah in Scinde, in honour of Robert Clive, hero of the defence of Arcot.
