Trentham Camp during the First World War

Trentham Camp near Upper Hutt, which was opened in October 1914, was the Defence Department’s first training camp. The earliest recruits lived there in tents, but wooden huts and other buildings were erected after the 1915 health crisis. This view looking north-east shows the camp in 1916 or 1917, with Trentham racecourse behind it.
