Hampstead baths war memorial Hampstead baths war memorial

In 1919 the residents of Hampstead decided to build a war memorial hall. In 1921, at the proposal of W.H. Robinson, who donated a section for the purpose, it was decided to build memorial swimming baths as well. The swimming baths were opened first, on 11 February 1922 (the hall was opened on 12 October later in the year).

On Anzac Day 1925 a 'Tudor style' gateway was unveiled in front of the baths. This incorporated two granite tablets listing the names of 40 local men who had given their lives during the Great War. Two further tablets, with another 24 names, were added after World War II.

The swimming baths, which were renovated in 1963, still serve the local school; the hall was replaced in 1974.
