This nice little hall with its understated Arts Crafts features was built in 1917 but it was not built as a war memorial hall.

The First World War memorial for Kakanui was a Roll of Honour scroll, in the old school, until about 1926 when the new Kakanui war memorial was erected on land gifted to ‘the Kakanui community for the erection of a permanent war memorial’ by John Maffey.

When the old school was demolished the Roll of Honour was relocated to this hall and another, to memorialise the soldiers who died in the Second World War was installed also.
