The MP for Egmont, Mr E.B. Corbett, opened the Kapuni War Memorial Hall on 16 June 1956. The opening ceremony was followed by a variety concert. A thanksgiving and dedication service was held the following day, and a grand opening ball was held four days later (for a copy of the Souvenir Programme, see the entry Kapuni War Memorial Hall –  1956 on Kete New Plymouth).

The architects were Graeme Laurenson & Associates of New Plymouth. The roll of honour was designed as a prominent feature of the interior. This was a wood-framed screen with 15 panels of clear or opaque glass situated between the lobby and the auditorium. One of the four opaque panes was lettered as follows: THIS MEMORIAL / WAS ERECTED BY THE / RESIDENTS OF KAPUNI / AND DISTRICT / TO COMMEMORATE THE / SACRIFICE OF THOSE WHO / SERVED IN WORLD WARS I and II. / 1914-1918 [,] 1939-1945. The three other others listed the names respectively of five men from Kapuni and district who had given their lives in the First World War and three who had given their lives in the Second World War, 55 men who had also served in the First World War, and 31 men who had also served in the Second World War.
