New Zealand troops took part in three landing operations to help the United States forces drive the Japanese from the Solomon Islands. The landings took place on Vella Lavella, Mono Island and Nissan (Green) Island. Also in the Solomons, the New Zealand cruiser Leander was torpedoed in the Battle of Kolombangara.
