Special constables on horseback, Petone

Special constables on horseback, Hutt Road, Petone, during the 1913 strike. The premises of Brown & Allen, upholsterers and blindmakers, are at left and those of saddler F.G. Reid at right.

The special constables sent over from Wairarapa left the train at Petone and met up with their Manawatū counterparts around Johnsonville. As they rode along the Hutt Road towards the Ngauranga Gorge, strike supporters rolled rocks down on them from the hills above.
