New Zealand camelier

New Zealand camelier

A trooper and camel from No 15 (New Zealand) Company, Imperial Camel Corps. This is a good illustration of the way in which the cameliers would sit upon their camels when riding them - lower legs crossed, out to the front, resting on the camels shoulders and lower neck, rather than sitting astride the animal like the rider of a horse.  The leather apron hung from the front of the saddle to protect the camel's shoulders and lower neck from chafing from the rider's boots can also be clearly seen.
