Queen Elizabeth II was New Zealand’s head of state and reigned as monarch from 6 February 1952 until her death on 8 September 2022 (9 September New Zealand time). Earlier in 2022 she had become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee (70 years on the throne).
This portrait was taken to mark the Queen’s Diamond (60th) Jubilee in 2012. She wears her New Zealand honours: the Sovereign’s insignia of the Order of New Zealand, the New Zealand Order of Merit, Star, Sash and Badge, and the Queen’s Service Order. The diamond fern brooch was given to the Queen by the women of Auckland during her first visit to New Zealand in 1953–54.
