South African War memorial tablet, Colyton

There is a lone South African War memorial tablet on the back wall of the nave of St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Colyton. The inscription reads: “NZMR // Erected by / the residents in the district. /  IN MEMORY OF / - TROOPER -  / ARTHUR H. HARRISON, / 2ND CONTINGENT / NEW ZEALAND MOUNTED RIFLES. / WHO DIED OF FEVER / AT NAAUSPORT, SOUTH AFRICA, / 22ND FEB. 1901. / AGED 24 YEARS. // Gone but not forgotten.”

The marble tablet is in the shape of a Gothic arch and is embellished with carvings of crossed flags, a mounted rifleman and (what appears to be) a wounded soldier with a levelled rifle. The mason and sculptor was a Mr Dowdall of Palmerston North.
