I was lucky enough to obtain the original RSA flagpole when the Sumner RSA was refurbished prior to the Christchurch earthquakes. It is tapered and hewn from solid timber. It has been proudly displaying the NZ flag at my homes since. Unfortunately it has snapped and fallen in the storm here last night, a sad sight. I will do my best to get it repaired but unfortunately it shows signs of many repairs and maybe beyond it. Tony Foster

I believe from an interview with someone connected to the RSA i saw on tv not long after the earthquake, that the restaurant of the RSA was closed as it was a Tuesday and not normally open anyway. This helped prevent many injuries and possibly deaths.

Billy I am sure that there were no RSA members hurt , but we do have 166 at last count dead with a total of about 220 people reported missing with Red Cross

Thank you for answering, I was wondering why I did not get information from Sumner, but have just found yours. I would like to establish a link with Sumner RSA and Bangor, N.Ireland, Royal British Legion.
Yes the two fatalities at they site is so sad, were any RSA members injured?

It was so sad to see on BBC news (here in Ireland) the RSA hall in Sumner after the earthquake. I do hope that there was not any loss of life or injury at the site. Wishing you all a speedy recovery. Billy
