
A raiding party of the 1/8th (Irish) King's Liverpool Regiment, 55th Division, at Wailly, France. Photograph taken the morning after the division's first major night raid on German trenches, 17-18 April 1916. Split into two parties of wirecutters and raiders, the Liverpool Irish bombed three German dug-outs and destroyed a munitions store at Ransart. Their sole fatality, Second-Lieutenant Edward Felix Baxter, was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
