Turkey surrenders

Turkey surrenders

Extract from the Evening Post, 1 November 1918. Celebrations over the surrender of Turkey were dampened by the harsh reality that New Zealand soldiers were still dying every day.

Grim reminders of what the country had already lost were ever-present during the surrender celebrations. Casualty lists of men recently killed or wounded ran along with, and sometimes alongside, news of the country’s rejoicing. By the time of Turkey’s surrender the impact of the influenza pandemic on New Zealand troops based overseas was starting to show in the increased numbers of deaths from ‘sickness’ and ‘disease’ listed.
