Waitematā Station

Resembling a modern European or Asian metro station, Auckland’s gleaming Waitematā Station (opened in 2003 as the Britomart Transport Centre) has helped boost rail commuter patronage in this sprawling, car-dominated city. In the 2020s major work was undertaken on the $5.5 billion City Rail Link, which would transform Waitematā into a two-way through station with an underground loop through the central business district, to support a projected increase in commuter patronage to 30 million by 2030. The CRL and its two new underground stations, Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape (the latter 33 metres below the surface) are due to be opened in 2026.
