These memorial gates at King Edward Park, Hāwera were erected in 1904/5 to commorate the Hāwera Industrial Exhibition. The exhibition organisers decided to include a plaque to remember Hāwera district residents who died in the South African War. Newspaper reports suggest there may have been another plaque on the right-hand side gate but this may have been removed at some stage.
