Hyde railway disaster memorial

The memorial cairn to the 21 people killed in the Hyde railway tragedy of 4 June 1943. The memorial was dedicated on 17 February 1991. The location of the cairn is about 500 metres south of the site of the tragedy.

John Maskell was only one year old and was returning to Dunedin with his mother when he was killed, his mother was trapped in the train for hours and lost her leg

My maternal Grandmother lost her twin brother Charles Mackenzie on Hyde train disaster. She told me it was like loosing part of herself as his twin sister. So very sad. I wish I'd had an opportunity to meet my Great Uncle Charlie. I'm saving to travel from Auckland to Otago to visit the memorial & pay my respects.
