Marion, I am sure you are correct with this. I looked up Charles Edward Smith's service record which confirms he was from Timaru. I've added some notes to his soldier page, including a link to his service record.
I'll update this page as well. What we don't know is whether this is a transcription error or if the initials are wrong on the memorial, if any one can help with this please email us at [email protected]

Can you check whether G E Smith, is supposed to be Lance Corporal C E Smith, Third Contingent, from Timaru. I am told that my grandmother's brother, Charles Edward Smith, son of Thomas & Ellen Usley Smith, died while overseas in the Boer War. It would be unusual to make an error in the initials on the plaque. Perhaps it is simply an error on this page.
