Shannon South African War memorial

Detail from memorial Detail from memorial

The South African War memorial in Shannon. The memorial is to Lance Corporal Percy Nation who was killed at the Battle of Bothasberg on 23 February 1902.

The memorial was damaged by vandals in 2007 and restored in 2011. The stone used for the restoration came from the same Takaka quarry as the original.

The top of the memorial was missing before the vandalisation and there is no record of what used to be there. An eternal flame was chosen as an appropriate symbol.

This memorial is registered by Heritage New Zealand. See further information on Kete Horowhenua.
