Marion Abelsted was born in 1873 in Clyde, New Zealand – the daughter of Frederick Abelsted, a Norwegian miner, and Jane Weddell Thomson.

Marion lived, with her parents, in Bendigo until she married in 1897 to Jacob Featherston, a Methodist minister. They had one son.

They travelled around the country living at Waikouaiti, Timaru and Inglewood. Jacob died in Christchurch in 1951 and Marion died in 1962.
