Ahuriri Harbour in 1850s

Ahuriri harbour and roadstead in the 1850s. Shows a pā and small Pākehā settlement.

During the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake the land here rose and sea water drained from the lagoon, giving Napier more than 2,000 hectares of new land. The lagoon became productive land, and the site of the present Hawke’s Bay airport.
