Helen/Ellen Alexander was born on 23 March 1870 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of Hector Alexander, a painter, and Sarah Simpkins.

Helen married Samuel Lister, a printer, in 1895; they had two daughters and lived in Bathgate St, South Dunedin.

Samuel died in May of 1945 and Ellen died on 2 September 1945. They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
