Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet/Jessie Dow was born on 8 February 1834 in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Dow, an agricultural labourer, and Janet Robin.

She emigrated to Otago in 1859 on the Alpine accompanied by her sister Margaret (See 149 Mrs McAra) her brother David and David’s wife and three children.

Jessie married George Anderson, a farmer, on 20 January 1860 and they had eight children.

When Jessie signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula.

They retired to Dunedin where Jessie died on 23 June 1909 and George died soon after on 2 July the same year.

They are buried together in the Broad Bay Cemetery.
