Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Barbara Sutherland was born on 3 December 1831 in Golspie, Sutherlandshire, Scotland – the daughter of Adam Sutherland, an agricultural labourer, and Christian Rose.

Barbara married John Anderson, a brass finisher, on 15 November 1861 in Edinburgh. They had a daughter before they emigrated to Otago in 1864 on the City of Dunedin.

They settled in Dunedin and had eight more children.

When Barbara signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Hanover St, Dunedin.

They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in November 1911 with a 'quiet but extremely pleasant gathering...festivities of a liberal character were partaken of, and music filled up a memorable occasion'.

John died at his home in Maori Hill, Dunedin in 1914 and Barbara died on 1 August 1926, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
