Elizabeth Gale Smith was born about 1853 – the daughter of James Smith, a carter, and Elizabeth Hill Gale.
She married William Bachop, a butcher, in New Zealand in 1871 and they had seven children, one who died in infancy.
William was declared insolvent in 1874 and again in 1879.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition her address was George St, William was declared insolvent in Kaitangata in 1894 and after that the family appears to have lived in Dunedin. Elizabeth died at her home in Dundas St, Dunedin on 13 August 1900 - she is buried in the Northern Cemetery with her parents.
William died in 1923 - he is buried with their daughter in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
