Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Gibbons was born about 1824 in Berkshire, England.
She married William Barnes, a blacksmith, in 1848 in Surrey and they had nine children before the family emigrated to New Zealand in the late 1870s.
They settled in Cromwell where William ran a blacksmith’s business.
In later life they moved to Mosgiel where William died in 1890 and where Jane signed the suffrage petition.
Jane died at her home on 26 January 1900 – they are buried together in the East Taieri Cemetery.
