Caroline Elizabeth Bateman was born Caroline Elizabeth Voak on 29 May 1836, Gloucester, Gloucestershire to Richard Voak and Caroline Elizabeth Mercer.

Caroline married Henry Bateman in 1873 in Berkshire. Henry’s first wife Ellen Strudwick died in 1871 in Windsor, Berkshire, England.

Caroline and Henry Bateman and three children (James, Elizabeth and Charles) came out to New Zealand on the ship Carisbrook Castle departing London on 29 May 1874 and arriving in Lyttelton, New Zealand on 2 September 1874. Henry’s occupation is given as Bricklayer.

The 1896 electoral roll for Waitaki records Caroline and Henry living in Springbook Street, St Andrews. Henry is a Bricklayer.

Caroline died on 8 December 1911 aged 75 years in Waimate. Henry died on 12 June 1912 in Waimate aged 82 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery. Henry is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, Plot 0015ME000014.

Caroline’s sister Ellen Wise nee Voak also signed the Petition.
