Biography contributed by Clare Cramond

Elizabeth Beckett nee Mogridge was born in 1870; the eighth and youngest child of Sarah Jane and Charles Mogridge who emigrated from Devon, England.

Elizabeth married George Beckett in 1893, the same year she signed the Petition, was registered on the Electoral Roll, and gave birth to their eldest child, Marjorie Violet. They were living in Frasertown where George was a settler who later owned stables then a garage.

The wives of two of George’s brothers also signed the Petition – Eugenie Beckett and Jane Hallett Beckett.

Elizabeth and George had more children; Conrad George (1895), Charles Windsor (1897), Lorna (1899), Arnold Herbert (1903), Harold (1905) and Grace Amy born in 1908.

When Grace married in April 1930, the Poverty Bay Herald reported on the wedding: 'The reception took place at the residence of the bride’s parents … the bride’s mother wore a handsome model frock of black lace over crepe-de-chine, black hat and shoes, grey tulle fichu, and carried a bouquet of gold and red chrysanthemums'.  After this glimpse of Elizabeth, sadly she died less than six months later.

Elizabeth was buried at the Wairoa Cemetery.
