Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Martha McIndoe was born about 1829 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. She married William Blackwood, a miner, on 27 July 1849 in Ayrshire.

In 1859 Martha and William with their five daughters emigrated to Otago on the Alpine, they had a further three children after their arrival in New Zealand.

The family were some of the first settlers in Caversham, William leased a quarry until the gold rush lured him away to try his luck for about five years. On his return the Blackwoods ran a bakery and grocery shop in Caversham.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1899 and the following year William died.

Martha continued to run the shop for two years until her son took over. She died on 15 April 1904 and is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
