Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Lynch was born about 1847 in Ireland. She married George Francis Burgess on 15 November 1868 in County Kerry.

They had four children, two who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to New Zealand.

George appears to have come before Elizabeth who arrived in Otago in 1875 on the Margaret Galbraith with their two children.

The family settled in Dunedin where they had a further seven children – two of these children also died in infancy.

George worked as a bricklayer – he was declared bankrupt in 1879.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Mount Pleasant, Caversham, Dunedin.

George died in 1906 and Elizabeth died on 28 May 1925, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
