Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:

This is most likely the signature of Esther Amy Butters, who has signed the Suffrage Petition with another Butters woman, likely to have been her daughter, Jessie Kate.

Esther Amy Young was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1838. At the age of 12 she moved with her large family to Oregon, USA, where her father was a farmer for a while. By 1853 the family had moved to New Zealand.

In 1868 Esther married James Butters, an engineer. They had three children: William, Jessie and James. The family lived on Franklin Road and later in Wallace Street in Ponsonby.

Esther died in 1898.
