Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jessie Clarice Emma Cockerell (known as Clarice) was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1856 – the daughter of John Cockerell and Jane.

She came to New Zealand as a child and she married Colin Campbell, a bank manager, in 1876.

They lived, at first, on the West Coast before Colin was transferred to Milton in 1880.

They had seven children, one who died in childhood, and were living in Milton when Clarice signed the suffrage petition.

In 1897 Colin resigned from his position and the family moved to Auckland, he died at their home in Devonport in 1916 and is buried in the O’Neill’s Point Cemetery.

Clarice died on 5 May 1939, she is buried in the Waikumete Cemetery.
