Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Sarah Sherwin was born about 1837 in Derbyshire, England – the daughter of Thomas Sherwin, a farmer, and Elizabeth Frost.
She married carpenter Nathan James Chatterton in 1865 and they had five children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1877 on the Waipa.
They lived in Dunedin until 1881 when they moved to East Gore where Sarah signed the suffrage petition.
Sarah died at her daughter’s home on 26 June 1917 and Nathan died the following year – they are buried together in the Gore Cemtery.
