Sarah Christina Leader was born about 1820 in Ireland. She married Henry John Chapman, a grocer, on 21 January 1845 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
They had eight children and Henry later worked as a clerk then a timber merchant.
The family came to New Zealand about 1863 and settled in Dunedin.
When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Filleul St & Sarah’s occupation was 'lady'.
She died at her on 11 August 1894 and Henry died in 1897, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
