Biography contributed by Helen Edwards.
Emma Hester Beattie was born about 1811 in County Clare, Ireland. She married William Clough in 1829 in County Fermanagh, Ireland, and had four daughters and a son between 1829 and 1840. Hester, a seamstress, emigrated to Scotland before 1858 with her daughters. She travelled to New Zealand about 1867 with her daughter, Emma Hannah; her son and two married daughters followed over the next decade or so. Mrs Hester Clough was the householder at the Forth Street (now Walton Street) address from the early 1880s. She died on 17 March 1901, aged 90, and is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, with two daughters and a granddaughter. Little is known about her husband, William, who probably died in Ireland before 1858. Her daughter, Martha Leslie, signed Sheet 114.
