Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret McQueen was born about 1833 in Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of Peter McQueen, a labourer.

She married Richard Connell on 12 November 1854 in Greenock and they had two children, one who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Victoria, Australia in the late 1850s.

A further two children were born in Victoria before the family moved to New Zealand about 1863 where their last two children were born and their son, born in Victoria, died.

They settled in Castle St, Dunedin where Richard worked as a boilermaker – he died at their home 'Clyde Cottage' in Castle St in 1891.

Margaret signed the 1892 suffrage petition while living in Castle St but was in Queenstown with her daughter (See 107 Margaret Robina Connell) when she signed the 1893 petition. Margaret died on 28 May 1903, she is buried with Richard in the Northern Cemetery.
