Joanna Catherine Gow was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of George Gow, a blacksmith, and Jessie Campbell.
She married James William Cumming, a bricklayer, in 1892 and they had 12 children together. Joanna's sister Christina also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
James died in 1912 and Joanna remarried to Thomas Roberts in 1913.
Joanna died at Playfair St, Dunedin on 3 March 1947 and she is buried in the Southern Cemetery with her family.
