Mary Hartley was born in 1840 in Yorkshire, England – the daughter of John Hartley, a weaver, and Ann Hudson.
She came to New Zealand with her family in the early 1860s and she married John Currie, a produce merchant, in 1862.
They had five children, two who died in infancy.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Thames St, Oamaru.
They moved to Hastings in the 1910s where John died in 1913 and Mary died on 1 October 1920.
They are buried together in the Hastings Cemetery.
