Jane (Jean) Dow was born on 18 May 1867 in Glasgow, Scotland, the daughter of Thomas Dow, a tinsmith, and Annie McMillan.
Jean emigrated to Otago, with her parents and three sisters, in 1875 on the Aldergrove.
Jean’s mother died in 1890. When Jean signed the suffrage petition she was living in Caversham Rise, Dunedin with her father and sister working as a housekeeper.
Jean died on 8 January 1934. She is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
