Fanny Duke was born in 1840 in Newington, Surrey, England – the daughter of Robert Duke, a coach maker, and Hannah Broadey.
She married Henry Alfred Edmonds, a cheesemonger, in 1865 and they had six children, three who died in infancy.
Henry died in 1882 and the following year Fanny emigrated to Otago on the Victory with her three remaining children.
When Fanny signed the suffrage petition she was living in Leet St, Invercargill.
She died at Green Island, Dunedin on 6 February 1915 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery.
